Discipline is having our own backs. It’s trusting ourselves to do the things we’ve committed to doing, even when, especially when we don’t want to do them. 
Discipline is accountability. It is honoring our commitments to ourselves. We are doing what we have said we would do.

You might be wondering what OverHunger is. Well, if you’ve gained weight, lost weight, and then regained it all again, or if you experience an exaggerated sense of hunger, or if you seem to be eating against your own will, then you have experienced OverHunger.

What if…

~WW, Jenny Craig, South Beach, Atkins, Nutrisystem had never been created?

~Calories and fat grams had never been created?

~Frozen meals and meal replacement shakes had never been invented?

~Height and weight charts had never been created (by insurance companies)?

I asked myself these questions recently. 

What if all of these things just didn’t exist?

What would I do if I wanted to improve my relationship with food and eating, and lose weight, but I didn’t have these reference points?

The Cause and Effect Cycle of Dieting

You restrict your food.
You tell yourself, “No, you cannot have that. It’s not for you.”
Food is forbidden, off-limits.
This feels terrible. Unjust. Unfair.
You rebel against the deprivation and scarcity.
If you cannot have the food you want outright, then you’ll take it any way that you can:
you sneak food, you steal food, you hide food.
You plot where you’re going to get it, how you’ll get it, if you need money and where you will get it.

It has become impossible to simply allow yourself to have the foods that you want. So, you go behind your own back.
Basically, you’re cheating on yourself.
Ultimately, you just don’t trust yourself.

When you don’t trust yourself, you rebel.

So this fantastic diet that was supposed to end your weight and eating struggles, did the opposite. It compounded them.

Cultivating New Beliefs

Our beliefs show up in our results. Whether we think we can do something or not, whether we are deserving of something or not, we’re right. We prove our beliefs to ourselves over and over again. Our beliefs are reflected in our thoughts, feelings, and actions. 

Case in point: Ten years ago, I lost a lot of weight and got into the best shape of my adult life. I thought I had it all figured out. But I didn’t. I regained all of the weight and then some over a fairly short period of time.

What is a thought error?

It is a thought that we mistake for the truth. We think the thought is a fact, when in actuality, it is not. We believe our thought errors wholeheartedly, and then we act upon them, much to our own detriment.

Planning my meals ahead of time makes me the authority on what I eat. I decide what my body needs for optimal health. I also decide what exception meals and joy foods I both want and need to sustain my healthy way of life without deprivation.

What Role Do I Want Food to Play in My Life?

Today, the food I eat provides me with sustenance, health, energy, and vitality. As well as pleasure and enjoyment.

But when I was in the midst of my disordered relationship with food, I made it mean all sorts of things.

Food was my
~best friend
~entertainment
~comfort
~safety net
~consolation.

When I felt like I didn’t belong, food was a comforting friend. I could count on food to be there when I had decided I couldn’t count on or trust anyone, including myself.
